During the winter months, I often journal and pray in the bathroom. My bathroom is tiny, so it’s the warmest room in the house. I sit near the heater vent, put a pillow behind my back, lean against the bathtub, then write my thoughts and communicate with God.
Speaking my praise, expressing my needs, and listening for that divine whisper.
The bathroom may seem like a strange place to worship. But I figure God knows all about my physical body anyway and doesn’t care where we meet — as long as we continue the relationship.
In the movie, Oh God, John Denver’s character was embarrassed when God (aka George Burns) showed up while John was taking a shower.
“What?” God said. “You think I don’t know what your body looks like? I made you.”
So I believe that God does not care that this daughter needs to stay warm and chooses the bathroom to keep from freezing while her heart forms words of praise. Plus, if I cry, I’m close to the toilet paper.
Psalm 22:3 reminds us that God inhabits the praises of his people. My interpretation of that verse is that God loves spending time with his children and hearing their expressions of worship. He does not really care how we worship or where.
Dancing in the living room with colorful scarves. Singing off-key in the shower. Swaying to the harmonies of an old hymn out on the deck. Or utilizing the echoes of a bathroom.
The important point is that we take time to meet with our maker.
The poet king, David, described his places of worship as:
- From the ends of the earth
- Within the sanctuary
- With all that is within me
Places and people vary, yet the creativity of methods that thank God for his many blessings helps us treasure our relationship on him. Sans the focus on where or how.
So in this new year, let’s find our particular sanctuary. Let’s accept God’s gift of hope by spending time with him. He doesn’t care where.
Where and how do you worship? Does a particular location stir you to praise the God who created you?

This winter we have decided to stay put in the cold mid-west. Not returning to Florida or our desert sanctuary of Las Cruces, NM. In the desert I miss opening the blinds each morning and seeing the sun rise over the Organ Mountains. Changing the mountains from black to first a pinkish glow, then a soft golden hue. I sit at the dining room table and prepare to write with the hymn “Morning Has Broken” ringing in my ears as a lyrical impetus for meaning and thankfulness. And I am both inspired and uplifted.
A visit to Las Cruces is still on my bucket list. It sounds lovely – especially in this frigid weather.
