The feral mama in my neighborhood gathered her kittens as the Kansas wind increased. Storms were brewing. “Possibly severe,” the meteorologist warned. In Kansas, we take storms seriously.
So did the feral mama, so her babies only needed to obey and follow her to the shelter she provided.
Those kittens were carefully herded under a cement porch. Away from the wind, Safe from any danger. They took shelter in the strongest place their mama knew and had created for them — a personal nest.
Psalm 27:5 reminds us that we are safe and secure as we follow our Savior. “For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling. He will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle” (NASB).
No matter what kind of trouble we are facing. No matter what type of storms are brewing. No matter what threatens us or scares us. No matter how strong the enemy or the cultural environment around us. No matter what type of uncertainties foster the wind of worry. No matter what.
As we focus on the one who keeps us safe, we find hope in the God who loves us and protects us. As we praise God for his power that is stronger than any storm, we find emotional and mental shelter. As we repeat the words of the Psalmist, we remember we are not alone. Even in the middle of the storm, we can find peace.
No matter what is happening, we are safe and sheltered by staying close to God’s heart. We can rest in God’s protection this very day.
What are some ways you have found shelter in God?
