A Personal Knowledge

The last three verses of Psalm 91 underscore the treasure of being a child of God. Because verses 1 and 2 have become the intention of the believer, then verses 14-16 are the result. They speak of a personal relationship with the Divine Trinity. Of a love that exceeds explanation. Of a trust based on faith-filled hope.

“Because I love God.” To love God is to believe in him. To want to spend time with him. To build on the relationship. To communicate with God. To be in love with the source of love.

“Because I know and understand God’s name.” To use the name of God in a reverent way. To understand how precious this name really is. To call yourself a Jesus follower and live like one. To pray on bowed knee or even face down, knowing we are mere mortals, but exceedingly loved. To have a personal knowledge of God’s mercy, love, and kindness.

“I trust and rely on God.” To remember what God has done in the past and believe he will continue to be faithful. To depend on the God you have not seen, yet you somehow know his presence. To believe that no problem is too trivial to bring before this dependable and resourceful Being.

“Knowing God will never forsake me. No. Never.” For those who have been forsaken by a human beings, this knowing is a comfort. This God will never, ever abandon us. Never betray the love he has spoken over us. Never leave us without some type of resource. Never lie to us. Never turn away from us. Never try to harm us for his own self-seeking. Never use his power as a weapon against us.

“I will call on God, and he will answer me.” To pray with the belief that said prayer will indeed be answered at some point in time. To know that God is available 24/7. Every day of the year. To understand that God is timeless, so his answers are beyond human comprehension. To experience those answers, record them in a journal, and reread them when times are hard. To grow in the truth that nothing is impossible with God.

“God will be with me in trouble.” One of the reasons Jesus came to earth was to share in humanity. To show us that he understood how frail we are. How much we struggle. How troubles come in waves. Yet Jesus walked on the waves of the Sea of Galilee. So whatever trouble we face, we can find strength in the truth that God is right beside us. Emanuel. God with us. Always. In every trouble. We are not alone.

“God will deliver me and honor me.” As God delivers us through our troubles, we feel the assurance of his love once more. It feels like an honor to be comforted and encouraged by the Divine Three. Bondage of addictions no longer have to control us. The prison of self-sufficiency no longer rules. Because God delivers us into a freedom unlike any other. So we feel honored to be his children. To know he is walking with us each day.

“With long life God will satisfy me and show me His salvation.” Since we cannot, of course, determine the length of our days on earth, I believe this verse is a prophecy about eternity. It is difficult to wrap my mind around the topic of ‘forever.’ But thinking of that time as a long life seems a bit more palatable. No matter how many birthdays we celebrate on planet earth, we can live satisfied with each day. Present with God through each 24-hour period. Then stepping into the eternal because of God’s salvation plan. A forever time with no trouble, no stress, no fears, no struggles, no frailties, no illnesses, no heartaches. What a satisfaction that will be!

I hope you have enjoyed these posts about Psalm 91. In the near future, I plan to release an e-book as an expanded version. In the meantime, read through Psalm 91 in whatever version you have. Revel in the words. Jot down your thoughts. I would love to read your comments.

  1. Diana are thinking about these things as we look at “The Garden of the Gods” not far from where we are this morning. “God’s World for earth and those of us who enjoy it and each other.”
