Yes indeed! There are definitely some benefits to living in the senior years. One of those is front and center during this week of July Fourth celebrations.
Freedom. As seniors we have the freedom of knowing more about who we are than when we were younger. We do not need to live by what the peer group says or does, because their opinions no longer matter. We have grown beyond that need. We can make our own choices and decisions that help us through these years or find someone who can help us with our problems.
Financial Independence. Many seniors have worked all their lives, saved money, and invested carefully. They enlisted the help of others who understood how to grow money and made choices about how to spend or give away their money. Although inflation has taken a definite hit on the bottom line, most seniors still know how to balance their budget and find ways to live within their means.
Resources. Medicare, Social Security, AARP, and other senior programs help us through these final years. We can apply for programs that help with food and housing. Sometimes we find people in the church or community groups with ideas for more resources. With some of the current uncertainties, we know how to be brave and ask for the help we need. Our representatives in Congress are supposed to be available to help us. We just need to be intentional about making sure we get what we have paid for all these years.
Relationships with our Children. We raised another generation of human beings, so we can be proud of the work we did. Grown children can become more like friends as we release them to live their lives and watch how they grow and learn. Although some seniors struggle with estrangements or other challenges, we can still use our wisdom to find a way to reconcile and always — always respond with the love of Christ.
Relationship with God. Seniors have spent a lifetime learning more about God. Hopefully, we have grown stronger in our faith during these final years, because we know how much we need to depend on God’s wisdom. And we may grow to feel God’s love in special ways that younger folks can only dream of. Most of the biblical prophets were people with several decades under their belts. We are now in that cadre of believers who have nurtured their relationship with God.
So . . . enjoy the freedoms we have as seniors. In spite of the challenges of the latter years, we are indeed blessed. And gratitude is always free.
