Most of us will profess that we trust IN God. When we gave our hearts to Jesus and decided to follow him, we trusted in God’s plan to save us. We knew our future life would be with God in the beauty of heaven — forever.
Because this process was based on grace and completed by Jesus at the cross, our part was fairly easy. Trusting IN God happened and now we live in the certainty and beauty of that amazing grace. This type of trust grows the hope in our souls. It gives us a reason to believe that tomorrow will be better.
But trusting day by day requires a more intentional type of living. Especially when circumstances come against us or chaos takes over. When life is hard and grief is deep. When the confusion of our times make us stop and ponder, Where is God?
Trusting each day and each moment means we set aside our worries and our fears for today to focus on who God is. We remember what God did for us in the past and believe — trust — that he will come through for us again. We don’t focus on the ‘what’ of life but rather on the ‘who’ of God’s immense love and power. Trust says more about who we believe than it does about who we are.
My cat reminds me of the power of daily trust. She jumps onto the recliner, circles a couple of times on my lap, then stretches out for an afternoon nap. Sunshine warms her fur as the vibrations of her purrs increase in volume. She is in complete trust, knowing I will keep her safe. I will not allow her to fall or forget about her. Her trust in me for those moments is complete.
We can do the same with God. Completely rest in his strength. Stretch our faith muscles with total peace that he will keep us safe and meet every need. Know with a certainty that God will not jerk us away from his arms or refuse us a safe haven.
So we have two choices: to trust IN God and to trust God daily. Both are positive choices. One changes our eternity. The other determines how we live day by day.

As I work through the development of chapters in my new manuscript, “I Assert,” I try to make certain my proclamations are aligned with “caring assertiveness.” You recommended Bishop Mariann Budde’s new book, “How We Learn to Be Brave.” As an Episcopal Bishop, Budde has demonstrated her trust in God and the teachings of Jesus. To be strong in advocating God’s will when facing the deceit and messages of hate Trump uses to push forward his words and actions that promote recrimination and accusations. Distrust. But his tyranny and approach to life and leadership will end someday, and his legacy will be in tatters. Trust and the authentic love of others are what matters, as proclaimed by Jesus.
Our faith is based on trust, and I often ask in Bible studies, “Does God trust you?”
To carry his message of love. To be a person of integrity. To fight for justice and mercy and walk humbly with God. It all comes back to Trust.
“Trust says more about who we believe than it does about who we are.”
