So Late So Soon

During my birthday month, I am celebrating one of those significant years. Although I usually ignore my age, somehow this one feels more important than the ones before. A definite ‘aging’ reminder of how quickly life has passed.

Growing up during the 60s-70s, we were often reminded of end times prophecy. Encouraged to be looking for the return of Jesus at any moment. Certain that the terrible events of our world were significant markers of the imminent Rapture. How off target those warnings turned out to be!

But because I was steeped in the legalistic culture, I believed them. It seemed ludicrous to plan for a future time when I would be my current age. My peers and I were convinced that our twenties would probably be the upper limit of our aging process.

The naivete of my young heart and mind is astounding during these current chaotic times. How much closer we must be to the end now. Yet it is possible that the Rapture will not happen during my lifetime. In fact, I rather doubt that it will.

Yet the aging number looms and reminds me that life is indeed but a shadow of eternity, a whisper of what will be. Dr. Seuss says it best:

“How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?”

During these years of my final act, I have learned a bit of wisdom. And believe I have earned the right to share it in this public space.

  • We have only the current day before us. Spend the time wisely.
  • Each day is a gift. Let gratitude be your constant activity.
  • There is a better life beyond these years. Too many out-of-this-world experiences to doubt this truth.
  • God will be faithful, no matter how many more days we breathe earth’s air.
  • Death is just a step through the thin veil into eternity. No need to fear as Jesus steps beside us.

So as part of my birthday month, I will focus not so much on the aging number (although I still find it hard to believe!).

Instead, I will hang on to the incredible promise recorded in Revelation 21:3-4, “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’” (TNIV).

Shameless Promotion: Dare I ask for a birthday gift? I would be grateful if you would order my book, Sustain Us, Oh Lord: Finding Strength When Life is Hard.
