Finding Your Magnificat

During the Christmas season we often read the Luke 2 account of the birth of Jesus. Many of us have already committed verses 1-14 to memory. And we rejoice in that final ‘Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.’

But another important passage precedes the birth of Jesus and the account of the shepherds. In Luke 1:46-55, we read the words of this teenager who was chosen to be the mother of Jesus. Mary’s Magnificat expresses her faith and the courage it took for her to carry a baby in her womb that had been conceived not by a man, but by the Spirit of God.

Her bold expression begins and ends with praise to God, and her acknowledgement that she is merely a humble servant. Mary declares God’s power, His mercy, and His creative deeds throughout the generations of time.

Part poem, part hymn — Mary’s Magnificat presents an example for us as we approach this new year. What praises can we offer to God? How can we underscore what God has done for us throughout the last months? And what are the hopes we present to God as we enter January 2026?

I encourage you to write your own Magnificat, then share it — even as I share mine with you:

‘My soul glorifies you, Lord, and my spirit finds joy in God my Savior.

For You have remembered me, heard me, and seen me this past year.

I am Your humble servant.

Thank You for all the spiritual blessings I have in Christ.

You have done so many great things for me.

You are holy, yet You love me.

Your mercy and grace extend to me and to my children.

You have sustained me this year, helping me through physical pain.

And You have provided for me during the lean months.

You are transforming me by renewing my mind,

Keeping me focused on Your power — not the chaos of the world systems.

You have filled my soul from scripture and other readings,

Then allowed me to write the words that erupt in honor to You.

You remember to show me Your mercy,

And always surround me with Your grace.

You have kept every promise You made to me,

So I am grateful.

And I praise You with my entire heart, soul, and mind.’

As you flip the calendar and enter a new year, reflect on your own Magnificat and be more alert for God’s presence within you and around you.
