Holy Disruptions

Perhaps this has happened to you. Plans are solid for an upcoming event. People invited. Groceries bought. Supplies carefully packed in the car. The space rented. Clothing chosen. You’re in charge and excited about the weekend.

Then you wake up with a mysterious illness. Sore throat. Slight fever. COVID-negative but feeling lousy-positive. Can you push through and do it anyway? Drive two hours with brain fog that longs to return to the coziness of bed?

You pray through it, asking for divine healing. Right now! But it doesn’t come. In fact, with each quarter hour, you feel worse. Now, added to the physical symptoms is the enormous giant of guilt for letting people down. Having to call off the event.

After I contacted everyone, I dragged my sad self back to bed. Cried a few disappointed tears. Vowed to reschedule in a couple of months.

Later, I heard about the spontaneous meeting some of the participants put together. They met at a coffee shop and worked on some writing activities. They cemented their goals and learned more about each other. One of them designed a new website for another. They connected in ways we would not have had time for at my planned event. Together they did more than I could have imagined. I was proud of them.

Disruptions come in life through various venues: car problems, physical illness, dangerous weather alerts, etc. We can sit around in self-pity and cry because our plans have been skewed. Or we can look at the changes as holy disruptions and be grateful for how God can work everything out in a creative way.

It took me a full week to recover from whatever the bug was. But it only took a few moments for everyone else to gain the benefits of a holy disruption. For that, I am grateful.
